Firing instructions for Metal Clay

The UltraLite Beehive Kiln is the perfect choice for firing PMC+, PMC3 and Art Clay 650. The Kiln heats quickly and evenly. Pieces should be completely dry before firing. If desired place a Ceramic Insert on the top of the Kiln cover while the Kiln is on. This provides a heated surface that will help your pieces dry quickly and thoroughly. Dries pieces in approximately 10 Minutes.

Due to varying voltage the Firing procedure in most areas can be preformed with the lid on.

Preheating the Kiln:
Place one Insert on the heating element then cover the kiln and preheat for 45 minutes.

Test a small piece of Metal Clay:
Remove the lid and place the metal clay on the preheated insert until the initial binder burns off. A small amount of smoke and then a short flame will occur. Cover the kiln for 30 minutes and watch to see if firing with the lid on will work in your area without melting. The piece should glow orange red (Salmon color) if this is the case fire with the lid on.
If it starts to shimmer like mercury it is over heating remove the lid and you will need to change your firing procedure to firing with the lid off.

Firing with the lid off:
After the initial binder burns off cover the kiln for the first 15 minutes and then remove the lid for the balance of the firing.

Recovery time:
Cover the kiln for 15 minutes between firings.
